Arrested, but for charity

I'm going to be arrested -- for charity! Many charities raise money by inviting participants to raise money set periods of time particularly if the person has many contacts. So...I’ll be getting arrested for charity this year. I don’t know when but it will be for a good cause: I’m doing this to raise money for The Society for Professional Journalists and my alma maters, Georgetown University and Columbia University. My review of Hilary Mantel's Wolf Hall, which won the Man Booker Prize a couple of years back, is up at Amazon. Read it here. (Spoiler: I liked it).

Latest fabric purchase

So here's my latest fabric purchase:
Vintage Afro Glasses

It's a print of a vintage ad featuring black women wearing glasses. Pretty neat-looking. I'm probably going to make a tote bag or a slouchy cross-body bag out of it.

It's from Spoonflower, and it's by designer kkitwana. Yes, that is a review by me on the page for the fabric itself.

Being an older parent is not bad

Check out my Moms at Work blog post at the Orlando Sentinel about how being an older parent isn't as bad as many people make it out to be: http://blogs.orlandosentinel.com/features_momsatwork/2012/12/no-being-an-older-parent-isnt-the-worst-thing-in-the-world.html

Working moms, do you want more $$ or a vacation?

Read my post on the Moms at Work blog on the Orlando Sentinel website about a recent study indicating that most moms who work outside the home would rather have a 20 percent increase in pay than a year off for vacation.]

You can read more of my Moms at Work posts here.

Redoing my personal website

I'm in the process of redoing my personal website, anikapalm.com.

At the moment, it's bare bones, but I'm taking suggestions.

Go on over, take a look at what it looks like now.

I'll wait.

[*hums some more*]

Oh, you're back?

Do you remember my old site? I'm trying to come up with something new that says "this is what Anika Myers Palm looks like in web form."

So what do you think I should do with this one? As I said, I'm taking any and all suggestions.

My review of the latest Beverly Jenkins book

So, I'm a big fan of romance writer Beverly Jenkins.

I've reviewed her latest book, Destiny's Embrace, on Amazon.

My review is here.

Spoiler: It's not my favorite.

If you're interested, although I generally write under the name Anika Myers Palm, on Amazon, you can find me as A.M. Palm.

On covering arrests

I'm Anika Myers Palm. If you find yourself as a crime reporter, it's a good idea to develop relationships with law enforcement officers. You'll find yourself on a first name basis with police officers, with sheriff's deputies, with even FBI agents. You will absolutely want to talk to them. Not only can they let you know who's been arrested and why, but they can also give you off-the-record information that will help you track down more people or information for your story. So, yes, stay on law-enforcement officers' good sides, because they're often your best sources!
